The logic behind it is the next:
Either way you're going to have 2 healing items total (assuming you didn't spend too much before coming back through the gate).
Basically, you decide whenever those healing items are going to be 2 medkits or a healing draft + medkit.
The downside of medkits is quite obvious: if you need to heal someone else during a boss fight you have to play around each other. Of course, if there are no rats around it's not an issue, but most of the time during that fight there are. In other words, two people have to find a relatively safe spot where the boss won't be able to hit them with ratling gun or time the healing so the one who uses the medkits doesn't get hit by green warp lightnings. If there are rats around, the one who's being healed have to defend the guy healing him.
If you have to heal someone with a medkit you have to make two people busy, unless you drop it on the ground by swapping it with a tome. Even then, it is not as fast and safe to use as a healing draft. By leaving a healing draft on the ground you give everyone (especially the guy who's carrying tome+grim) an ability to just pick it up and quickly heal when needed. While it heals for less, it's a big enough advantage to use.
It also should be noted that if you leave it there, you'll be able to use an extra healing item to heal/top off one more player before leaving Norsca due to having 3 tomes.
