The CV skill gap is alive and well and is the most damaging thing to balancing and player reception.

I used https://na.wows-numbers.com/ and the associated sites for the other servers for all stats as of 2/25/19.

We will take a look at the stats of Hak and Midway on every server and compare it to a normal T10 ship for reference to see a standard skill gap.

I have chosen Hak and Midway because T10 CVs are the strongest and have the most battles.

First is the Hak

NA

AVG Win rate All: 50.09% AVG DMG ALL: 90,559
Top 50%: 61.84% Top 50%: 129,521
Other 50%: 38.34% Other 50%: 51,597

With win rates there is a 23.5% difference and with damage there is a 77,924k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

EU

AVG Win rate All: 50.01% AVG DMG ALL: 87,583
Top 50%: 61.86% Top 50%: 126,447
Other 50%: 38.16% Other 50%: 48,719

With win rates there is a 23.64% difference and with damage there is a 77,728k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

RU

AVG Win rate All: 52.27% AVG DMG ALL: 91,195
Top 50%: 64.84% Top 50%: 130,666
Other 50%: 39.7% Other 50%: 51,724

With win rates there is a 25.14% difference and with damage there is a 78,942k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

SEA

AVG Win rate All: 49.36% AVG DMG ALL: 102,236
Top 50%: 60.23% Top 50%: 138,994
Other 50%: 38.49% Other 50%: 65,478

With win rates there is a 21.74% difference and with damage there is a 73,516k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

As you can see when comparing the stats of Hak on every server there is a substantial skill gap even between halves of the player base.

Now the Midway

NA

AVG Win rate All: 48.61% AVG DMG ALL: 76,024
Top 50%: 59.2% Top 50%: 107,547
Other 50%: 38.02% Other 50%: 44,501

With win rates there is a 21.18% difference and with damage there is a 63,046k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

EU

AVG Win rate All: 48.52% AVG DMG ALL: 76,048
Top 50%: 59.24% Top 50%: 108,006
Other 50%: 37.8% Other 50%: 44,090

With win rates there is a 21.44% difference and with damage there is a 63,916k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

RU

With win rates there is a 21.9% difference and with damage there is a 62,926k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

SEA

AVG Win rate All: 49.25% AVG DMG ALL: 91,039
Top 50%: 59.69% Top 50%: 116,720
Other 50%: 38.81% Other 50%: 65,358

With win rates there is a 20.88% difference and with damage there is a 51,362k damage difference between the top 50% of players and the other 50% of players.

SEA is interesting because it seems less drastic of a skill gap like the other 3 servers. In fact on SEA Midway looks quite healthy. However when looking at the other servers this is less so.

For reference and as a base here are the Grosser Kurfurst stats. I chose the Kurfurst because it is a BB that is right in the middle of the pack stats wise and it is T10 as well.

NA

AVG Win rate All: 50.71% AVG DMG ALL: 82,118
Top 50%: 57.61% Top 50%: 98,775
Other 50%: 43% Other 50%: 65,461

Between just halves of the player base the skill gap is much smaller. With win rates there are only a 13% difference and with damage there is a 33k damage difference

EU

AVG Win rate All: 50.06% AVG DMG ALL: 80,242
Top 50%: 56.44% Top 50%: 95,795
Other 50%: 43.68% Other 50%: 64,689

Like NA, between the two halves of the player base the skill gap is much smaller. With win rates there are only a 12.76% difference and with damage there is a 31k damage difference

RU

AVG Win rate All: 51.76% AVG DMG ALL: 86,208
Top 50%: 58.72% Top 50%: 100,794
Other 50%: 44.8% Other 50%: 71,622

Like the others, between the two halves of the player base the skill gap is much smaller. With win rates there are only a 13.92% difference and with damage there is a 29,172k damage difference

SEA

AVG Win rate All: 50.73% AVG DMG ALL: 81,179
Top 50%: 57.3% Top 50%: 96,194
Other 50%: 44.16% Other 50%: 66,164

Like the others, between the two halves of the player base the skill gap is much smaller. With win rates there are only a 13.14% difference and with damage there is a 30,030k damage difference

Conclusions

As you can see here there is a skill gap between both halves of the player base, but this should provide a reference point for comparison for the CVs.

Why can you see players tearing it up with CVs, and a lot complaining about feeling useless. This numerically shows what is occurring. Half of the player base for CVs is having a very difficult time, while half of the player base is dominating.

Here is the tough part of CVs. If you buff them that good player base gets even stronger, while the other half of the player base can be ore comfortable.

The other tough part is you need to decide whether to balance for the less skilled player base or the better. Personally, I would like to be down the middle. Just like the Kurfurst and other ships, we need this skill gap to be lower without letting the highly skilled players run away with matches anymore.

Playing on NA I have been seeing less and less CV matches. More and more nerfs will kill the class. CVs need to be more reliable for damage, but they can’t be allowed to get carried away and totally dominate matches.

The skill gap needs to be toned down.

Of course take this with a grain of salt. These stats do take into account the Hak when it could still Air Shima. The new class was just released, things are changing constantly, we have a smallish sample size. Players can and will get better over time. However, if the lines are still this uncomfortable for players trying to get better, I can only see the class going the way of the RTS.

Ironically the stats for each T10 CV are extremely similar in break down to the old RTS T10 CVs. AKA the skill gap currently is just about as much as the RTS. If you guys would like I can edit this post and show the old numerical skill gap in the ships.

Tl;dr: CVs are interesting. These stats explain why CVs are so polarizing. 50% of the population find extremely good success, but the lower 50% of the player base are doing extremely poor. There is a very large gap in stats between even two halves of the player base. A gap that is extremely close to how bad the old RTS CVs were.

The consistent nerfs CVs are receiving are warranted, however they are intended to nerf that upper half. These nerfs targeted at the better half of the player base will make the skill and stat gap even larger. The CV rework was designed to diminish this skill gap, but all these changes are just making it larger.
