tl;dr at the bottom

Since folks continue to be concerned about CV/DD interactions I've continued to keep track and this is what is visible from a statistical standpoint.

First let's look at population!

People do not appear to be playing DDs significantly less. At first glance there seems to be a significant % difference, but this difference is reflected across every ship and thus is not a DD differential. The DD difference from the average is -3.13% when accounting for the population differences pre-patch and now. Anything under 5% is not generally considered statistically significant and lower thresholds greatly increase your chances of Data Dredging or P-hacking.

Many people have mentioned previously that they are burnt out thanks to the relentless tide of back to back events. People just don't have the energy/time to grind 24/7 in every new event. So this definitely plays a large role based on the Reddit feedback I've seen. Some folks are taking a break because the CV rework as well, so I'm not trying to discount that.

Ship Averages from 2 weeks before the rework: http://maplesyrup.sweet.coocan.jp/wows/ranking/20190119/na_week/average_class.html

High Tier:

  • BB Players: 15,790
  • BB Battles: 399,106

  • CA Players: 13,955
  • CA Battles: 345,879

  • CV Players: 659
  • CV Battles: 14,738

  • DD Players: 9,520
  • DD Battles: 241,664

Low Tier:

  • BB Players: 10,300
  • BB Battles: 249,378

  • CA Players: 8,980
  • CA Battles: 224,495

  • CV Players: 874
  • CV Battles: 19,034

  • DD Players: 5,967
  • DD Battles: 140,139

Total Players across all ships: 66,045

Total Battles across all ships: 1,634,433

Ship Averages from week ending in 03/02: http://maplesyrup.sweet.coocan.jp/wows/ranking/20190302/na_week/average_class.html

High Tier:

  • BB Players: 12,309 (-22.04%)
  • BB Battles: 307,570 (-22.93%)

  • CA Players: 13,171 (-05.62%)
  • CA Battles: 334,424 (-3.31%)

  • CV Players: 1,332 (+102.12%)
  • CV Battles: 35,093 (+138.11%)

  • DD Players: 7,267 (-23.67%)
  • DD Battles: 182,929 (-24.30%)

Low Tier:

  • BB Players: 5,467 (-46.92%)
  • BB Battles: 128,422 (-48.50%)

  • CA Players: 6,955 (-22.55%)
  • CA Battles: 171,631 (-23.54)

  • CV Players: 1,546 (+76.89%)
  • CV Battles: 34,520 (+81.36%)

  • DD Players: 4,631 (-22.39%)
  • DD Battles: 109,853 (-21.61%)

Total Players across all ships: 52,678 (-20.24%)

Total Battles across all ships: 1,304,442 (-20.19%)

So relative to the overall population numbers here is how ship class distribution actually changed when judged by battles played by taking the original player count and adjusting by the overall battle differential of -20.19%:

  • BB High Tier: – 2.74%
  • BB Low Tier: – 28.31%

  • CA High Tier: +16.88%

  • CA Low Tier: – 3.35%

  • CV High Tier: + 158.30%

  • CV Low Tier: + 101.55%

  • DD High Tier: – 4.11%

  • DD Low Tier: – 1.42%

Interestingly, it's BBs that have lost the most players relative to other ship classes and all of that focused in low tier! Now of course these statistics are meant to give a ballpark idea and not be 100% accurate, but it's plain that CVs are not significantly affecting DD population here with a differential of >5% at high tier and >2% at low tier. I think what we are facing vs DDs is a largely perceptual issue that is not backed up by the stats. But lets go further and look at DD performance via Maplesyrup!

Lets look at the Shimakaze as an example since it's got weaker AA and has a torpedo focus, things supposed to be most affected:

And to be comprehensive we'll also give the full stats of all DDs.

All DD's stats pre-rework patch:

– Survival: 29.17%
– K/D: 1.02
– Caps: 27.27%

Low Tier:
– Players: 5,967
– Total Battles: 140,139
– Win Rate: 49.43%

All DD's stats week ending in 03/02: http://maplesyrup.sweet.coocan.jp/wows/ranking/20190302/na_week/average_class.html

Hi Tier:
– Players: 7,267
– Total Battles: 182,929
– Win Rate: 50.01%
– Damage: 37,179
– Frags: 0.68 per match
– Survival: 28.88%
– K/D: 0.96
– Caps: 27.71%

Low Tier:
– Players: 4,631
– Total Battles: 109,853
– Win Rate: 49.62%
– Damage: 19,512
– Frags: 0.74 per match
– Survival: 21.39%
– K/D: 0.94
– Caps: 15.37%

Just like before we see all values are within a 5% variance, outside of population which we've previously dealt with separately. There does not appear to be any significant differential in overall DD performance across the board.

For fun let me put in last weeks DD statistics! This would be after Radar/flooding patch entirely.

– Total Battles: 137,863
– Win Rate: 49.65%
– Damage: 18.985
– Frags: 0.72 per match
– Survival: 20.83%
– K/D: 0.91
– Caps: 14.85%

TL;DR Conclusions

  • DD game stats are within 5% of pre-rework stats. No significant variance has occurred.
  • Overall population of the game was down compared to pre-rework. Constant event burnout and CV rework both no doubt played a part.
  • DD population was only down 3.13% more than the average.
  • Surprisingly low tier BBs showed a significant population drop of 28.31%, but this did not affect high tier BBs.
  • CV players are significantly up relative to pre-rework, but their overall population numbers are still much smaller than any other ship.
  • Current CV population numbers are roughly 37% at high tier and 88% at low tier of what would be needed for the ideal of 1 CV per side in every match. As the CVs level through the grind I expect this to even out somewhat.
