Tier 8 JMSDF Harukaze

A post-WW2 Japanese design outfitted with USN equipment and an advanced, Swedish GFCS that improved its firing arcs and accuracy when compared to other ships using the same main armament. Its main mission was Anti-Submarine Warfare; but it was also well-equipped against surface or air threats. It was small and stealthy. However it lacked speed due to its defensive role.

  • Armament: 127 mm 5" /38 cal. Mk. 12 x3 (20 rpm, 1800 HE, 2100 AP, 12.3km range)
  • 40 mm Bofors x8
  • HP 13,800
  • Maximum Speed 30 kn
  • Surface Detectability 7.08 km (base)
  • Air Detectability 3 km
  • Slot 1: Damage Control Party
  • Slot 2: Smoke Generator (Japanese)
  • Slot 3: Engine Boost or Radar (7.5 km, 20 sec.)
  • Slot 4: Hydroacoustic Search (3.5km / 5 km) or Defensive AA Fire

Note: This DD is very similar to a Benson class but possessed some better equipment. I see it as being somewhat stealthier but a little lighter HP wise. It does however, lack torpedoes and has two less guns. I imagine that it could make up for its shortcomings with gimmicks such as modules that the IJN branches do not possess, slightly increased RoF, and stronger AA than Benson.

Tier 9 JMSDF Murasame

The Murasame class was an upgrade from the ASW-focused Ayanami class. Much of its armament was chosen for a defensive, anti-air role. It was famous for its "Holland Slope" afterdeck design. Its main guns were originally meant for Montana. After being used on Midway, the dual-purpose single gun mounts were transferred to these ships. They give the Murasame excellent surface warfare range and AA performance.

  • 3 x 5"/54 cal. Mk. 16 guns on Mark 39 Mount (18 rpm, 2000 HE, 2300 AP, 15km)
  • 4 x 3"/50 cal. Mk. 22 guns
  • HP 15,000
  • Maximum Speed 30 kn
  • Surface Detectability 7.2 km (base) Air Detectability 3.24 km
  • Slot 1: Damage Control Party
  • Slot 2: Smoke Generator (Japanese)
  • Slot 3: Engine Boost or Radar (7.5 km, 24 sec.)
  • Slot 4: Hydroacoustic Search (4 km / 6 km) or Defensive AA Fire

Note: I skipped the Ayanami class because of the light main armament. They were mostly submarine hunters. This class forces some tough choices on the player with regards to consumables. I gave the guns a heavy hitting shell to represent the larger payload compared to most 127mm shells. That combined with the lack of torpedoes would balance the output. It has the same range as Austin.

Tier 10 JMSDF Teruzuki

The second Akizuki-class destroyer from the early Cold War period. It was designed to be a flotilla leader. It received the same guns as the Murasame class and had torpedo tubes that could be loaded with imported or Japanese torpedoes. It was designed to handle a variety of roles.

  • 3 x 5"/54 cal. Mk. 16 guns on Mark 39 Mount (18 rpm, 2000 HE, 2300 AP, 15km)
  • 4 x 3"/50 cal. Mk. 22 guns
  • 4 x 533m Torpedo Tubes
  • Mark 16 Mod. 1 (10.5km., 19,033 dmg., 66kn, low detection)
  • Type 72 Model 1 Option 1 (15km., 16,000 dmg., 65kn, low detection)
  • Type 72 Model 1 Option 2 (20km., 16,000 dmg., 45kn., low detection)
  • HP 18,000
  • Maximum Speed 32 kn
  • Surface Detectability 7.56 km (base)
  • Air Detectability 3.53 km
  • Slot 1: Damage Control Party
  • Slot 2: Smoke Generator (Japanese) or Torpedo Reload Booster
  • Slot 3: Engine Boost or Radar (7.5 km, 24 sec.)
  • Slot 4: Hydroacoustic Search (4 km / 6 km) or Defensive AA Fire

Note: Finally we have the Akizuki-class, named Teruzuki to avoid confusion with the Tier 8. I looked up various post-war torpedoes and found the Type 72 Model 1s from Japan, which are sort of a mix of Japanese and Swedish torpedoes as far as performance. Japan also had access to US stocks so I put down the Mark 16 as a heavy-hitting option. This ship is not as tanky or fast as Hayate, Harugumo, or Shimakaze. But its range, armament, and AA make it annoying when used defensively.
