Tips for DDs in upper CV Play (for new and veteran players)

Rework CV user here wanting to shed some light on what really will make me (and others of my horrible kind) hate life if you like using a destroyer in random battles or elsewhere that features a CV or two (or dear god three) in play:

1 – Hold "Ctrl" to get your cursor and click the gear cog over your minimap, check every box. Then hit your "+" key a few times to expand that minimap. This will help with EVERYTHING else I'm about to list.

(Veteran) Note: As a destroyer, your role is as an escort. Usually in the past that veterans lament over is that role meant spotting. When you have a friendly carrier(s) though in any CV-featuring game that aspect gets often covered for you. So instead of seeing that a limitation of your role see that instead as an opportunity! Other aspects of the destroyer is you are a LOT of (generally burst) firepower on the move. Be it you're a gunboat DD, torpedo boat DD, or the recently popular AA spec'd DD. While yes, in the past, some DDs were one-boat armies, most still required teamwork of an allied vessel to really dominate (such as being able to keep something spotted outside of your smoke). Do not abandon that mentality as we go forward.

2 –

Press P to turn off your AA if you want to hide (this is more defensive than offensive). Half of the time your AA is what helps CVs spot you, not the detection range (since many DDs have AA that reaches outside of the air detection radius). Pick out your AA-strong teammates and escort them (if you aren't sure who is then just ask in the team chat). You don't have to be near them (under their AA bubble), you just have to be able to turn toward them if you feel like a CV is determined to hunt you. The longer the match goes, the more likely a CV's planes are going to be on cooldown from losses; spread your legs toward the end of matches rather than the beginning (this is where your spotting, damage-rendering, and capturing potential gets to shine).

3 – Like the torp-boat meta; find your AA-strong teammates and escort them (if you aren't sure who is then just ask in the team chat). You don't have to be near them (under their AA bubble), you just have to be able to turn toward them if you feel like a CV is determined to hunt you. Unlike your AA-strong allies though (who have to get into position first) or torp DDs, you don't have to wait until deep in a game to bring that killing power to bare. Start pummeling the enemy from afar. What are any of us going to do? Shoot you? You're small and able to change direction easily to avoid shots. If a red cruiser or BB gets greedy, you can shoot back AND you have a friend who can too. If a CV gets greedy too; you've got a friend for that too. You're the sickest bait, my dude, so long as you're not too far out in front. Even if there's a DD between you and what you're shooting at; let them be, your CV and AA buddy want that lonesome DD too but fear what's shadowing them. Kill or make the shadow run, then swoop in prow-toward that DD if near, spotting them for your team without fear of repercussions. Rinse, repeat, dominate.

4 – New meta brought some new tricks. Some DDs make for some surprising anti-aircraft boats thanks to dual-purpose guns and commander perks that go both ways. Also DDs fitted to be AA boats have a LOT of use still in non-CV matches. But in a CV match, you're still not exactly a one boat army, especially against high-tier CVs; however the role of the escort though expands a LOT. You have speed and can reposition easier than most. You make planes suffer a lot but you still can suffer a lot in return. Using your smoke delays the pain your way but does NOT make us enemy CVs suffer in return if nobody can spot the planes over you for that sexy AA to start ripping into. Furthermore, especially fighting Tier X planes, your AA alone isn't enough suffering to stop tanky high-tier planes in their tracks UNLESS you partner up with someone else's AA, especially if they're the intended target. FIND WHO HAS WEAK AA THAT THE ENEMY WILL LIKELY TARGET… and escort them (you don't have to hug them but like the other metas, be ready to swoop in on them with that speed you have if you see the enemy CV trucking planes their way). You can also bait the enemy CV by keeping your AA guns off until they're deep in your bubble. If you are a DD that gets Defensive Fire consumable, this is also the perfect time when to use it.

Protip: We CVs flee from ships we see a boatload of black flak clouds around/toward a ship. That tells us you're a boat that is AA-specialized.

Protip: You can switch and stack AA sectors faster and more brutally than anyone else, especially with the commander level-4 perk.

We can't avoid/attack what we can't see.

Go forth and put us in our place.
