Hello everybody and welcome back to the BFV Re-imagined series. If you are new to this series, essentially what I am doing is re-imagining Battlefield V in its entirety to see how I would have liked it – a more enjoyable, more immersive experience that is complete on launch and ready for the live service model. The developers would release the game on 20th November 2019, giving them at least 1 and a half years more developing time to get this game finished.
For this episode, I will be looking at the game’s AI.
That means the code for both the friendly and enemy AI throughout the single player and Combined Arms sections of the game. This is because the AI currently is atrocious, nearly never seeking cover, being oblivious during stealth segments and blindly rushing the player just to name a few issues. I realise the more complicated the AI the more CPU usage, which could problematic for consoles, but the AI definitely needs some work, and with a more linear gameplay style, the resources should be available for changes.
Additionally, if attacking or in a neutral stance (during open-world sections), the AI will move within 10m of your position if haven’t seen you for 5 seconds.
Features of the 4 Difficulties

Main Cannon – Will shoot from 30-100mCoaxial Machine Gun – Will shoot from 30-5mHull Machine Gun – Will shoot from 40-5m
Additionally, if you are holding AT Weapons (Panzerfaust, Sticky Dynamite, etc.) in your hands in the Hard and Hardcore difficulties, tanks will target you, and begin retreating up to a distance of 40m from your position.
Enemies will have a similar field of view when looking at the player from the front, however would have a heightened sense of awareness from the sides and back. This is because you are virtually invisible to the Ai when behind or to the side of them at the moment. On every difficulty except Easy, If the player is within 5m of the AI for 3 seconds, they will turn in the players direction. Additionally, from Medium difficulty onwards, when a lure is thrown to distract the AI, they will glance in the direction it was thrown from before going to investigate it.
Medium Machine Guns
Any soldier equipped with an MMG will only be able to hip fire it, unless deployed with a bipod. Potential bipod deployment areas would be present throughout each of the levels for the enemies to use.
This concludes this episode of BFV Redesigned. I hope you have enjoyed the decisions I have made with the game’s AI, even if this was a relatively short episode. I believe that better AI will not only give the player more of a challenge, but will enhance immersion and enjoyment. The more linear focus of the levels included in the singleplayer and coop should allow for this AI to perform better as well. Many more improvements could be made to AI other than listed here, as these are just some of the most important ones. Of course I am not a game developer and I simply came up with these decisions for the fun of it. Maybe what I suggested wouldn’t be fun or wouldn’t work in BFV. You tell me.
