BFV Re-Imagined

Hello everybody and welcome back to the BFV Re-imagined series. If you are new to this series, essentially what I am doing is re-imagining Battlefield V in its entirety to see how I would have liked it – a more enjoyable, more immersive experience that is complete on launch and ready for the live service model. The developers would release the game on 20th November 2019, giving them at least 1 and a half years more developing time to get this game finished. For the start of the this series I will be discussing the single player War Stories, but once that is done I will move onto multiplayer.

For this episode I will be looking at the a whole new War Story I have created, Sahara.

This will follow the 509th PIR in their endeavours in the North African campaign, during Operation Torch. They were the first use of paratroopers by the US in combat. Previously I had stated I would do a redesign of Under No Flag as the second episode, however I have pushed that back to complete this War Story, since it is earlier.

Oran, Algeria.
Autumn 1942.

Germany has declared war upon the United States of America.

With the tides turning in the deserts of Egypt for their favour, the Allies prepare for an invasion that will form a pincer around Rommel’s Afrika Korps.

This plan is codenamed OPERATION TORCH.

The Vichy French colonies of Algeria and Morocco are about to be stormed by 200,000 allied soldiers and 850 warships. Their alliance with Germany will be tested.

Not only will soldiers attack from the land and sea, but from a whole new environment:

The air.

David Winters is a sergeant from the 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. We see him lying inside the damaged cockpit of a plane, with flames starting to engulf the area. His eyes then snap open and a flashback ensues.

In Cornwall, England, he is seen directing soldiers under his command in a C-47 transport plane, bound for Oran, Algeria. Once they have all entered, he precedes into the transport as well. The plane then takes off and the cutscene skips to mid-way through the flight. The soldiers discuss whether the Vichy French will fight back, with one of them pointing out they helped the Brits attack the Germans in 1940, so why would they collaborate now? David tells them they will have no idea, so they need to be ready for any engagement. One soldier, Robert Barnes, who is David’s Cpl. and friend, then asks where they are at, which David forwards onto to the pilot. He tells them they think they are passing over Spain, but it’s really hard to tell with the harsh weather conditions. The pilot then asks the co=pilot to change their radio frequency again, in an attempt to make contact with HMS Alymbank, their beacon ship. Another soldier then asks where the other planes went, and the crew onboard look around in the clouded sky for them in desperation. Suddenly, anti-aircraft fire fills the sky, and the C-47 is shaken about. The pilot informs the soldiers they will have to make an emergency landing, or risk being torn apart. Pulling out of the thick clouds, the plane heads for the dry salt lake below. It then crashes and the screen goes black.

The cutscene then cuts back to David Winters, in the wrecked plane. Coughing, he then realises the fire is starting to spread towards him. He quickly gets up and attempts to drag the other remaining soldiers out of the burning wreckage. He is about to go back for the last man when-
BOOM!
The plane explodes.

Some of the other soldiers start to wake, while Winters stares at the destroyed plane. Looking around, he is hit by the realisation that most of his men have died. Robert Barnes asks him what they are going to do, and he snaps out of his emotional freeze. He responds that they are to take the Tafarquay airport, and checks his map to see where they are. Winters discovers that they have landed west of their intended drop zone, and orders the men to get ready to go.

The following gameplay would consists of a Call of Duty style mission, as you make your way across the desert to the airport. However, the gameplay would not be as linear, as well as the fact that you would be able to command your forces, since you are a sergeant. You could instruct them where to go and who to kill. Your allies would go into a downed position where they would be revivable if they have taken enough damage. Depending on your difficulty, they would be able to hold on for a certain amount of time before dying. For example, on Easy it might be 40 seconds, 30 seconds on Medium, 20 seconds on Hard and 10 seconds on Hardcore. This would introduce the squad mechanics to new players, something which is unique to Battlefield.

While making your way to the airfield, you would come across a main road, littered with abandoned Vichy French vehicles. You suggest commandeering the vehicles to the airfield, and there is a prompt for you to open the door to one of their P107 halftracks. After starting to open the door, you would hear soldiers shouting in French and would turn around, only to get hit in the face with the butt of a rifle.

Helluva Way to Die

Awaking in a Vichy French outpost, tied up on the floor, Winters discovers it is now night. The player now watches as one of your squad mates is escorted by Vichy French soldiers to their barracks. They then come back to escort you and Robert, however after being lifted up, you both over power the guards and knock them out, running away from the camp as fast as you can. The player then gains control of Winters, and he and Robert must run away as they are perused by the Vichy French guards. Eventually you escape into the freezing cold desert night. Because of the temperature, you must find heat sources along the way, just like in the Nordlys mission. I thought this is a very cool game mechanic and so therefore implemented it here, since it makes sense in the environment. The rest of the mission will follow you trying to make your way back to the frontlines, with campfires and Vichy French outposts along the way.

Eventually you will find a lone house and, exhausted and suffering from hypothermia, you would both run it and collapse in it.

Winters wakes in a bed from the house he collapsed in, only to see a person standing over him. He quickly reaches for his knife, about to attack when Robert shouts to him to stop. He realises it is a civilian woman who has been nurturing them both back to health over the night. After a brief moment of silence, he apologises, and she walks out of the room. Following her, Winters finds her cradling her baby in the other room. She offers him a coffee, which he drinks. They then both say thank you and leave to find their way back to the airport.

The cutscene then finishes and the player assumes control again. This time, the player is not far from the airfield, and once they arrive, they find a battle is underway between the Vichy French and US 509th PIR Paratroopers. The squad mechanics from section 1 would be the same, allowing the player to be in control. Players would be able to choose in what order to capture the various objectives at the airfield, reducing the overall linear gameplay but still retaining focus. The mission finishes as the US Paratroopers secure the Tafarquay airfield, and celebrate with some captured beer.

David and Robert meet a commanding officer outside the airfield, and discuss their next combat drop, which is scheduled for the 15th September, a little less than a week away. They are to take the Youk-Les-Bains airfield, on the Tunisian border. David then remarks:
“Ah, to hell with it, let’s do this!”

Now back in a C-47, the paratroopers prepare for their drop. The soldiers discuss the mission ahead, wondering if the airfield is in German or French hands. Shortly after, David calls the soldiers to action, since he is the jump master. Switching to first person, the player experiences the combat jump as they descend upon the airfield. Once landing, the Americans find the airfield supposedly unmanned. Pushing forward to the barracks, they kick the door open and find the French inside, defenceless. The French forces quickly surrender, and the Americans secure the airfield. A rumbling sound then fills the barracks. Winters and Barnes walk outside to find a German counter-attack with tanks on the approach. US forces scramble to defensive positions, and escort the French prisoners back into their barracks.

The following gameplay would consist of 5 waves of German counter-attacks, which would increase in difficulty, and hopefully provide a challenge for players. Note: German squad leaders can call in mortar strikes via red smoke canister if close enough. A squad is made up of 10 soldiers: 1 Officer, 1 Medic, 1 Machine-Gunner, 7 Riflemen.

After the 5th wave, a cutscene would ensue, in which the Germans would push forward into the airfield. David would be bayonet charged by a German, and would be sent on his back, fighting to stop the blade touching his skin.
BANG!
The German would drop dead, and David would get up, to see a Vichy French soldier aiming his rifle at where the German was. He had saved Winters. Looking around, multiple French soldiers would be seen assisting the Americans in driving back the Afrika Korps. The cutscene would then skip to after the battle, with David Winters receiving the Regimental Crest from the 3rd Regiment of Zouaves (the Vichy French) as a sign of respect. The two officers would salute, and the screen would fade to black.

The Regimental Crest received from the French 3rd Regiment of Zouaves later went on to become the symbol of the 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, worn by all members.

Vichy French and US forces fought side by side in the Tunisian Campaign, eventually driving the Afrika Korps out of North Africa.

Future campaigns saw troops from many countries join sides with the Allies to liberate their countries from occupied rule.

After nearly a decade of war, Algeria finally gained independence in 1962.

This concludes this episode of BFV Redesigned. I hope you have enjoyed the decisions I have made with this War Story. My reasoning for selecting this story was that I wanted to have all the faction represented in BFV’s original War Stories have their own war story. That is the French, British, US and Germans. Hopefully the gameplay will be less lone-wolf and more squad-focused, which is vital to Battlefield’s gameplay. Of course I am not a game developer and I simply came up with these decisions for the fun of it. Maybe what I suggested wouldn’t be fun or wouldn’t work in BFV. You tell me.
