Battlefield 8 - Thoughts on the state of the game from 1,500 hours of gameplay in the last 3 games alone.

I've played 300 hours of Battlefield 5 200 of Battlefield 1, 1,000 of Battlefield 4, and DICE doesn't value my opinion. The veterans in the community like myself, who has played since 1942 came out, when I was a kid have been essentially betrayed. BF3 and 4 were masterpieces. Before that BF2 was fantastic, as was Vietnam in my opinion.

Battlefield 1 came and changed things. Levolution was insane. Air battles were highly challenging but highly rewarding and the planes were fun to use. Battlefield 1 felt fun, even when you died. It felt authentic. It was a little glossed up but it felt gritty still, the mud, gas; and fire it was insane. But it was too different from Battlefield 4. It dared to be different, but it went back in time and I understand how great of a feat that was but it was not what the consumer base wanted because it was a little too different. A reboot of a series is hard to pull off, but it boils down to a few key issues from my experience.

1) Community. We went from BF3 and BF4, with Battlelog, one of the best community interfaces I have ever seen, with a focus on platoons, where we had a place to have a sense of belonging, to nothing. Dedicated rental servers, my platoon alone spent approximately $3,000 AUD alone on servers. (Based on 12 months 3 years) mainly paid for by a few senior leaders. At the height of our platoon we had 40 players in our platoon so we always had people to play with in a 32 player server. We had custom emblems, pages, a back story. Now? We have our initials sure. But we can't even give ourselves custom emblems. And don't get me started on the mess that is Community Games.

2) Gameplay and gunplay; Gunfighting use to be intense because of the array of gadgets that were useable and practical The mortar for instance. They removed this staple that was perfect for taking down that pesky camper or two; riot shields were insanely fun to use and in introduced a comedic aspect, and the thought they put into things like gas grenades and rocket rifles; AT and AA launchers that did decent, but most importantly CONSISTENT damage and were easy to use meant players could rely on them. Players at large aren't real soldiers so angle of attack is difficult to understand for them. Where as in BF4 we knew, aim for the back and it'll be right. Now, aiming for the back gets you 15 damage just for them to quick repair. Essentially wasting your first round.

The TTK scandal was another major issue. When the Pacific came out I played it heaps. We finally had good content. The bullet penetration that people were excited about was working well, and we knew if we picked up a rifle we could out shoot smgs at medium ranges. It wasn't perfect. But the community liked it as a whole. However, since 5.2, I've seen more of my friends leave to play on pc to play different games, and those that are left? Well they just use Type 2a's. So I guess there's medics now right? All this could've been circumvented if you gave us hardcore.

3) Engine. All they had to essentially do was port over BF1, change the models, maps and tweak it a little and it would've been a perfect game to finish this generation of consoles in terms of graphical power. I remember BF3 and BF4 looked less graphically appealing than on PC but it still looked good. Same as BF1, so surely they could do the same with BFV right? Well they were able to, but they were lazy. So lazy in fact that we had German truck props on Japanese maps and still have German paratroopers jumping out of British planes. There response? An arrogant Twitter post by a developer that should've been sacked for the way he responded in such a rude way to the people that feed his family. All games have bugs on launch. It's a tough gig, but Battlefield 5 still has day one issues. No team balancer (DICE PLZ), tank customization coming soon (TM) spawn in glitches, revive glitches. Vehicle spawning is absolutely infuriating, even more so that we cannot customize vehicles while we wait for them to become available. Or that we are stuck with a Sten gun for all factions is just pure laziness.

4) The support and overall content. I personally had no issue with paying for a premium subscription. It meant I got content that I paid for that I could a) Rely on being released on time when announced and b) I could trust it was of fairly decent quality. Games as a service is a horrendous idea. Constantly adding and removing game modes is frustrating. Having to chose between in Australia conquest or breakthrough most of the time is just plain sad. Community Games is the closest we get to choice with the game modes and that doesn't count towards Tides of War, so there's no point playing it that way. The response from DICE? "We are aware of the issues and have passed it on to the dev team". Or we get sarcasm. I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to sue the pants off them for false advertising, after all, last time I checked it looks nothing like the reveal trailers. Why the game is still making money? Because somehow they've convinced gamers that as long as they get their Valentine's day skins, it's all good.

It'll be interesting what they do next; EA will make money regardless of what DICE does. But whether DICE remains profitable; well that hinges on what they do next time they release a Battlefield title. Just remember BF1 smashed the views in its reveal, you all saw the memes. Where as BFV was a let down. Good luck Dice. My stubborn ass will be here regardless. Perhaps one day you might even ask for players like me to help out in the development process. (CTE anyone)
