TLDR: There's no reward for being good at COD anymore. The rewards depend on how much money you're willing to spend.
I have been playing COD for almost 10 years now. My first cod was MW2, and the multiplayer was great, despite it's flaws. MW3 came out a couple years later, and I absolutely loved that game. I played the shit out of it. You know why? Because there was always something to grind for, some goal I could set for myself.
I loved the fact that if I got 1000 headshots with the G36C or 1000 Predator Missile Kills, I could display that hard earned Title on my player card. It was extremely rewarding. I also loved just filling up each Title Page with all of my earned titles. My OCD kicked in when I saw one blank title card missing. I would want to earn that, get that page filled. And I felt rewarded when I did, and I could show off my reward to other players. MW3 was a fantastic game. It gave me a sense of accomplishment. Earning those titles and emblems we're extremely fun, because it was the only thing that players noticed.
Black Ops 4 has no sense of accomplishment, other than Dark Matter. I have unlocked that, and I do feel accomplished, but not as much as I did playing MW3. I have no desire to play BO4 anymore because there's nothing else to grind for. The supply stream is useless. There nothing in there that screams "accomplishment". The challenges don't appeal to me because calling cards don't have the same "wow" factor anymore. In MW3, titles and emblems we're the only thing to earn. That's how you stood above the rest. You want that sweet looking title? Better get 25 double kills with C4. In this game, there's DM, and thats it. There's nothing to keep me pushing, nothing to grind for, nothing to unlock at the end and feel rewarded, nothing to claim bragging rights on. And that's why this game feels dull. The "cool" things in this game aren't locked behind a skill level, but a paywall. You want that cool looking outfit? Better pay $5 for it. You want a sick looking camo? Better get lucky in the reserves or pay money until you get it.
I enjoyed this game in it's prime. I enjoyed grinding for DM. The gameplay is fun, without specialists. BO4 had so much potential, but they ruined it with their monetization scheme. There's no reward for being good at COD anymore. The rewards depend on how much money you're willing to spend.
