I quit playing Call of Duty last night. I was excited for the BO4 update, yes, I played a bit, but I realized immediately that the content was there to distract us from this weird new gambling system.
Activision, it’s not working for me anymore. I still revere your old titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops II, because those games weren’t saturated with all this gambling, all these opportunities to prey on kids and favor he who pays additional money. Years over years of fond memories. But it’s different now.
Gameplay-affecting content is still being granted first to the people that have no problem paying $100 on top of their $60 purchase at the start of every season. You’re offering cosmetic content exclusively from paid packages and you’re even locking some of the things that have been paid for behind a grind that, you guessed it, can also be expedited with money. And now, on top of all this, an experience earn rate increase for the lucky players who get weapon variants from the Black Market (or from more expensive editions of the game)?
This is not fun. There are infinitely better ways to do these things, and Apex Legends, a 100% free-to-play game, is absolutely kicking your ass in that respect. To anybody that defends the Call of Duty money pit model because “you can grind without paying” or “you don’t need that content to compete”:
Is this really okay to you? Is this what you had in mind for Call of Duty? Is there truthfully nothing you’d change about these $60 games, assuming you didn’t drop nearly double that for the season pass? Saying “the system won’t change because a few voices aren’t enough,” or anything to that effect, is not okay. I’m tired of how these things are being handled by Activision, and I know that many of you are, too. Customization content and new weapons are great, but not this way. The world is moving on without this model, and Activision has already lost so many people this year because they’re too stubborn to ditch what can only be called a diabolical moneymaking scheme.
I already paid for this game.
Activision, you’ve lost me permanently, or at least until you can set this straight. That makes me profoundly sad, being the longtime fan that I am (or maybe used to be). This is not Treyarch’s, Sledgehammer Games’ or Infinity Ward’s faults. These studios are owned by Activision. Activision is 100% in control of the implementation of these transactions, regardless of who is responsible for the concept.
If you paid for this game, you should be upset by this. Change is not coming if we keep shaking our heads and saying “Ah, that sucks. But whatever.” The gaming industry has evolved.
If nothing does change, Black Ops 4 is my last CoD purchase. Activision needs to be made to care, and the vocal minority needs to become the majority. We are the buyers. Activision doesn’t exist without us.
