Ok, So there is something I am noting in regards to Season of the Chosen that I don't really think happens often in Destiny history. And that is, for once, both the in game casual story, and the in depth lore story, are being used to work together more coherently then before.
Let's look at Caiatl, since she seems to be the focal point of all that. In the lore (And I'm no expert on this current lore) she has been taught by Calus to try and apprecate art, and taught by the captain of the cabal armies why war is important. She represents a meeting point for the old and new of the cabal.
Thing is, in the lore the Cabal lose their home. It's gone, probably for good. And everything Caiatl has done so far lorewise has been impacted by that loss, and by the needs of her people.
The main difference here? THAT'S ALSO SHOWN IN GAME. The entire choice of trying to get Guardians in her empire is because of this, and that is said as such in game. It's WHY she held the meeting with Zavala. In HELM dialogue, in actual speach. she explans her reasoning more in depth then in the ill fated meeting. And in this weeks Glykon mission, we are able to come to a arrangement and understanding regarding the Glykon and future endeavors there. We hear her talk about the losses of her people too.
All of that lore stuff? IT'S BEING SHOWN, AND IMPACTED ON, IN GAME, IN THE MAIN PLOT, IN A WAY THAT ENRICHES BOTH OF THEM.
Now it's not perfect. For example, I'm given to understand from others the failure of the opening meeting was mainly due to cultural differences. The opening cutsecne of the meeting needed more context to show BETTER that this was rather a cutural misunderstanding rather then just Zavala or Caiatl being a cock. The HELM in game could do a better job of pointing out these dialouges too.
For that matter, Zavala and the rest of the Vanguard needs to react more to this stuff. Amanda, Crow, Osiris, and (for other more negative reasons) Saladin are doing a good job of that. Zavala and others are as static as ever, the leadership not asking if what we are doing is right. And of course, as always, we and our ghost are silent on the matter and just want a new gun or for Eris to make Caiatl into one.
But in regards to the character of Caiatl? This combination of casual, in game storytelling and lore based story, working together to enrich BOTH, is something Bungie needs to do more of. Cater to the guys who just wanna shoot with some cool dialogue and the lore guys by drawing on one to enrich the other.
TLDR: Caiatl is a good combo of lore and casual in game storytelling that caters to all. Do this more. Do it well.
