Destiny 2

The story so far (for beginners)

destiny2 9 - The story so far (for beginners)

I've seen a few comments here from New Lights and beginners who say they're pretty lost with the story and how things fit together. With the content vault a lot of flow and info is lost, so I can understand how confusing it can be.

I'm no lore expert, but I figured I would give a summary (as best I can muster) of what's happened in the Destiny universe so far – at least the main points.

There's so much lore and awesome detail in and between all these points. I would suggest reading the wikis and watching lore videos to catch up if you can! But this should hopefully cover the main stuff.

Destiny 1

  • The Guardian awakens in the Cosmodrome by Ghost, a vessel of light from the Traveller (big ball)
  • They travel to the Last City on Earth, and meet the Speaker and the Vanguard – Ikora (Warlocks), Zavala (Titans) and Cayde-6 (Hunters).
  • The Guardian Battles the Fallen on Earth, wakes up the Hive on the Moon, fights Cabal on Mars whether they wanted to or not, and is led to Venus by the Exo Stranger to take on the Vex
  • The Guardian makes their way into the Black Garden with the help of Awoken Queen Mara Sov and her bro Prince Uldren to take out the heart of darkness, which was blocking the traveller's light
  • Traveller starts to heal from its battle with the Darkness many years ago.

Dark Below

  • Hidden one and Hunter, Eris Morn lost her fireteam trying to take on a Hive Knight named Crota, who is planning to invade Earth.
  • She lost her eyes, replaced them with a Hive Acolyte's peepers, and crawled out of the Hellmouth on the moon.
  • The Guardian joins up with Eris and eventually takes Crota out.

House of Wolves

  • Mara Sov opens the Reef to Guardians, looking for help to hunt down the Fallen House of Wolves that betrayed her.
  • The Guardians work to track down a Fallen Kell, Skolas, who was trying to unite all Fallen under one banner.

Taken King

  • Turns out Crota was a Hive prince, and his dad, Oryx, is none too happy you iced him. So he comes to say hi.
  • Mara Sov sacrifices her corporeal form to cripple Oryx's invasion.
  • Oryx is one of three powerful Hive lords, who has the power to 'take' – turning other common enemies into a new faction.
  • The Guardian finds their way onto Oryx's vessel and takes him out.

Rise of Iron

  • Some of the oldest light bearers, called Iron Lords, venture deep into the Cosmodrome looking for SIVA – a self-replicating nonotechnology that can be programmed to become almost anything.
  • SIVA went hostile and killed most of the Iron Lords, with only Saladin (and Efrideet) escaping the massacre.
  • The Fallen get their hands on SIVA, and the Guardian joins Saladin to take them out and destroy it for good.

Destiny 2: The Red War

  • The Cabal pounce on the Last City, trap the Traveller in a cage, and separate all guardians from the light.
  • There is a giant ship called the Almighty threatening to blow up the sun, as a failsafe.
  • The Guardian survives the assault, travels to Titan, Nessus and Io to bring the Vanguard back together.
  • They concoct a plan to disable the almighty, and take out Ghaul – the Cabal leader.
  • Ghaul goes down, the Traveller wakes up and breaks the cage – and as a result, pyramid ships outside the solar system activate.
  • A massive ship called the Leviathan enters the picture, with ousted Cabal emperor Calus, inviting Guardians on board to challenge them and test their mettle for rewards.

Curse of Osiris

  • Former Warlock Vanguard Osiris is on Mercury investigating the Vex. Mercury is home to a massive Vex simulation engine called the Infinite Forest.
  • The Vex are simulating a bunch of futures, including ones where there is no Traveller.
  • The Guardian joins up with Osiris to stop the simulations by taking out Panoptes – the Vex mind that manages the forest, and applies its simulaions to the physical world.

Warmind

  • Hunter Ana Bray – assumed dead – is looking into her past on Mars, when a Hive God Xol, and his ally Nokris (Crota's brother) defrost and start causing havok.
  • The Guardian joins Ana, The Warmind (AI network) Rasputin, and fights back, ultimately destroying Xol and Nokris.

Forsaken

  • There's a disruption at the Reef Prison of the Elders. The Guardian joins Cayde-6 and Mara Sov's number two, Petra Venj to get it under control.
  • There's a prison breakout where Uldren Sov – under the influence of the darkness – escapes, along with 8 scorn (zombie Fallen) barons.
  • Cayde-6 dies at the hands of Uldren.
  • The Guardian and Petra hunt down the barons in the Tangled Shore with the help of the Spider (the shore's only law), and chase Uldren into the Dreaming City – a space elf fairy land made of dreams and other weird stuff.
  • Dark Uldren is cornered and killed by The Guardian/Petra, but not before freeing a giant wish dragon called an ahamkara.
  • This ahamkara, Riven, has been taken (the dark power of Oryx), and is chased down and killed by the Guardians. Guided by the wish to kill it, the ahamkara ends up creating a cursed loop in the Dreaming City where the same three weeks play out indefinitely.
  • During this time it's revealed that Mara Sov is still 'alive', and Uldren is resurrected by a Ghost as a lightbearer.

Season of the Forge

  • Guardians discover a new annex in the Tower, run by Ada-1, an Exo that is part of the Black Armory
  • The Guardian helps Ada-1 recover lost forges, used to make powerful weapons, while stopping a plot by the Fallen to use these forges and weapons to wipe out humanity.

Season of the Drifter

  • A rogue lightbearer called The Drifter shows up in the tower, and has a new game for guardians to play, called Gambit.
  • The Drifter is also lugging a chunk of weird space behind his ship, which takes Guardians to the realm of the Nine.
  • In this realm, Guardians are tested by the Nine (later revealed to be some sort of dark matter shenanigans relating to planets in the Sol system) and uncover more of the Drifter's history and origins.

Season of Opulence

  • Calus invites the Guardians back on board the Leviathan to challenge them for big rewards in the Menagerie – a mix of activities that pit Guardians against captured Hive and Vex.
  • Calus also asks for some help kicking the ass of one of this experiments gone wrong, using a Hive artefact called the Crown of Sorrow, which connects the wearer's mind to the Hive.

Shadowkeep

  • Eris Morn is back on the moon, and wakes up a new Hive Nightmare.
  • The Guardians travel to the moon to quell the Hive attacking in droves, and encounter a black pyramid.
  • They deal with the new faction of the Hive made up of remnants of Crota's and Oryx's 'family', including an assault on the Scarlet Keep and its spire.
  • Guardians help Eris deal with nightmare versions of her lost fireteam, gather equipment to break the dark seal blocking their path to the Pyramid, and make their way inside.
  • The Pyramid, using darkness, takes over Ghost and communicates with the Guardian, eventually promising 'salvation' in a vision of the Black Garden.

Season of the Undying

  • The Vex invade the moon, with a mind called the Undying Mind hiding across infinite timelines.
  • Ikora builds a portal in the Tower that allows the Guardians to pinpoint its location and take it out once and for all.

Season of Dawn

  • The Guardian's timeline shenanigans have broken time on Mercury. The Cabal, using a time-device called the Sundial, are trying to find a timeline where they win.
  • Guardians join Osiris and take out the Cabal Psions, eventually eliminating them and preventing doom.
  • During this time, the Guardian also manages to find timelines where they are able to help a legendary Titan, Saint-XIV, and prevent his death, bringing him into the current timeline alive.

Season of the Worthy

  • One of the Cabal Psions escapes the Sundial massacre, and sets the Almighty (from the Red War) on a collision course with Earth.
  • Guardians help Ana Bray activate and power up Rasputin's warsat network to destroy the Almighty before it makes impact.
  • Guardians also find out that it was Rasputin that was behind the SIVA crisis and destruction of the Iron Lords. He was trying to get his 'son' Felwinter back. Felwinter was an Iron Lord, but before being brought back as a light bearer, he was an exo created by Rasputin to interact with and assess humanity.

Season of Arrivals

  • The Black Pyramid fleet arrive in the Sol system and set up points of contact.
  • Eris Morn and the Guardians try to communicate, but are blocked by Savathun. Savathun is another Hive lord (lady?) who has been orchestrating things behind the scenes, including the Dreaming City curse. She's Oryx's sister.
  • The Darkness eventually gets its message across, telling the Guardian that something awaits them on Europa.

Beyond Light

  • Fallen Kell, Eramis, is gathering forces on Europa, using the power of the Darkness to rule, with the aim of dominating lighbearers and uniting the Eliksni (the proper name for the Fallen).
  • The Guardians join Variks (the former warden of the prison of elders) and the Exo Stranger (now revealed to be Ana's sister, Elizabeth Bray) to stop her.
  • Guardians get Stasis, a power of Darkness, and use it to take down Eramis' generals and ultimately Eramis herself.
  • Guardians discover that Elizabeth is in a time loop, where the Darkness always wins, and she is constantly trying to change that dark future.
  • She is also the grand-daughter of Clovis Bray, the Golden Age scientist responsible for SIVA, Exos, and a bunch of other tech. Clovis created exos to gain immortality, and is still 'alive' in two different exo frames.

Season of the Hunt

  • Osiris is investigating disruptions on the Moon, and his Ghost, Sagira, is killed. Before being wiped out by a Hive Knight, he is saved by a resurrected Uldren Sov, who is now known as Crow.
  • Guardians join Osiris and Crow – who is serving the Spider on the Tangled Shore – and hunt down Hive and Fallen 'wrathborn', who are under the influence of another Hive Lord, Xivu Arath.
  • Xiva Arath is the sibling of Oryx and Savathun, and is known as a War God, who gains power through conflict.
  • They eventually track down Xivu Arath's High Celebrant, which is leading the forces in Sol.

Season of the Chosen

  • Feeding into their lust for war, Xivu Arath infiltrated the home world of the Cabal and destroyed it, sending the survivors to the Sol system, seeking reinforcements.
  • New Cabal leader Empress Caiatl (daughter of Calus) tries to get the Guardians to submit to Cabal rule, in a bid to unite forces against the Hive. Titan vanguard Zivala refuses.
  • The Cabal host proving grounds to find the strongest among them to form part of their war effort – these are interrupted by the Guardians, who take out the champions.
  • Caiatl eventually agrees to pit champion against champion in a winner-takes-all scenario. The Guardians win, and settle into a truce with the Cabal.
  • During this time, rogue Psions try to assassinate Zavala and fail, with Crow protecting him and ultimately revealing his face – that being the one of Uldren Sov who murdered the Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6.
  • The Crown of Sorrow shows up again in the Glykon – a derelict Cabal ship where experiments were being done on Scorn at Calus' behest.
