Yesterday, I was waiting eagerly for the new SBCs to be released. As a huge Bundesliga fan, I was hoping for some Buli content. What we actually got was rather unexpected though. Esswein is definitely no remarkable player in real-world football, but he gained some notoriety in FIFA. Nevertheless, reactions were rather underwhelming on here, with many criticising (a.) the fact that he got a Flashback in the first place, and (b.) his relatively high price. I agree with both points, but still completed him. With some untradeables I had lying around in my club, he cost about 95k, so I decided to go for it. Here's my review of him:

First of all, here are his stats with him after 10 games, all of which were played in Division Rivals:

I used him in two different teams, one of which has Larsson up front, the other one 87 Hernandez and FS Joelinton. The positions I tried him in were ST, CF and CAM.

8 goals and 7 assists in 10 games online is certainly a good overall record and I must say that I certainly enjoy using him. Nevertheless, he is definitely one of the weirdest players I have used. This is because of the following facts:

(1.) The guy is a machine. 91 acceleration, 93 sprint speed, 92 reactions, 91 ball control, 93 dribbling and 90 strength together with 89 aggression is definitely a unique combination. He is lightning fast, has good ball control, and barely gets pushed off the ball because of his insane strength. In one game, even VVD struggled to bully him, something that you barely ever see in this game.

(2.) At the same time, the stats that would make him an exceptional striker apart from that is lacking. Here, I mean his rather low positioning (78) and his 82 finishing. Don't get me wrong, he does score his goals, you just shouldn't expect any miracles.

(3.) His defending stats are very high for a striker and you can feel it, especially the 89 aggression. He will win many unexpected balls back, which is extremely useful. Sometimes, you might surprise your opponent by having your first defender up top, and this can definitely be an advantage for you.

(4.) The passing on the card is decent enough, he didn't fuck anything up at all.

Taking these aspects into account, I would advise you to do the following: If you want to use Esswein (and there is certainly a case for this, I don't really see why he got all the hate in the first place), try to play him either as a supporting striker next to someone who is a prolific finisher or play him at CF/CAM. Esswein will create so much space and thus goalscoring opportunities. Here's one example of him holding up the play, passing the ball on and then scoring himself:

If you have the coinage spare, I can definitely recommend him due to his uniqueness. If you are more tight on coins, I would probably not advise you to get him and instead wait for other SBCs/ spend your coins on tradeables. I am sure that you will not regret getting him, although it might take a while to get used to him.

Oh, one more positive: He's got a sexy man bun in game!
