Now this might not make a whole lot of sense with all the time fu*kery going on and it might not really stay true to the mythology as I'm not too familiar with it, but it's just fun to think about.
So at the end of the first game, Thor shows up at Kratos' and Atreus' home and I don't think he means well. I think he has somehow learned of Atreus being the son of Laufey and being destined to become Loki (Odin does have spies everywhere). So he kicks Kratos' ass, kidnaps Atreus and takes him to Asgard.
Obviously this pisses Kratos off beyond belief so he starts looking for ways to get to Asgard, eventually teaming up with Surtr of Muspelheim, who has his own reason to take revenge on the Aesir.
Together they figure out a way to reach Asgard and proceed to lay waste to it and any Aesir who stands in their way.
In the meantime, Atreus realizes the wisest thing to do is to just play along and make the Aesir believe he's actually with them, essentially tricking them, only to stab them in the back once Kratos and Surtr arrive.
Now again, this may not make a whole lot of sense in the grand scheme of things, for example I don't know how Jormungandr would fit into all of this, except maybe if quite some time passes between Atreus getting kidnapped and Kratos getting to him. And It also kinda goes against the whole Until Gods Become Good theme of the first game, but still, it's just fun to theorize about.
What do you guys think?
