There's recently been a quite a few people coming on this sub to went there frustration about their lost save so I thought I'd try to give a method that doesn't require much knowledge and doesn't feel too intimidating for those who aren't comfortable with computer. I'll also use it as a reminder for the other main methods.

First let me recap the methods I've seen so far and their limitations:

Steam cloud saves

GoodBad
Doesn't require any computer knowledge at allDoesn't work if saves get corrupted
Completely automatic once setupDoesn't work if saves get deleted
Works in case of hard drive
Works in case of complete computer failure

Manual Backup

GoodBad
Works in case of hard drive failureRequires knowledge of save location
Works if saves get corruptedCompletely manual
Works if saves get deletedOnline service requires backup functionality
Works in case of complete computer failure if paired with an online backup service

Backup Script This is a great method but feels too intimidating to some people

GoodBad
Works in case of hard drive failureRequires knowledge of save location
Works if saves get corruptedFeels intimidating to people who aren't comfortable with computers
Works if saves get deletedAutomation feels even more intimidating
Works in case of complete computer failure if paired with a serviceAutomation done on a timer and not every time you save
Online service doesn't require backup functionalityRequires to run a script someone else made

Symbolic link + Online backup service (My method)

GoodBad
Much less intimidating than editing a scriptRequires knowledge of save location
No need to setup a scheduled task for automationOnline service requires backup functionality
Works in case of hard drive failureRequires admin privilege on your computer to setup
Works if saves get corruptedUploads 9MB of data every time you save
Works if saves get deleted
Works in case of complete computer failure
Fully Automated every time you save
Only a single command to run as administrator

Now for the explanation on how to do it. I'll be assuming you're using Windows 10 but it should also work with Windows 7 and 8.

1) First you'll need to know your save location. It is located in the location you installed Steam. Usually it's something like "C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<Steam ID>582010" or "D:Steamuserdata<Steam ID>582010" where <Steam ID> is an 8 decimal number. This folder also contains your settings. If you want to exclude the settings for some reason (they weight almost nothing) the path include the "remote" folder inside the "582010" folder. I'll be referencing this folder as <save folder> for the explanation

2) You'll also want an online service than includes backup (versioning) functionality like Dropbox. For the explanation I'll be assuming you're using Dropbox but things should translate fairly simply if you're using another service. You'll also need to know where you Dropbox folder is located on your computer (you are required to decided on it upon installation so you probably know already)

3) Inside your Dropbox folder, create a Game Saves folder. This is theoretically optional but I'd advise to do it so you can set this up for other games if you want in the future. Do not create a "Monster Hunter World" folder! I'll be referencing this folder as <backup folder>.

4) Now run Command Prompt as an administrator. To do that, simply open the start menu (the Windows symbol on the bottom corner of your screen), then type command (it should open the search feature automatically as you start to type it), right click the icon and choose "Run as Administrator". Normally, you'll get a UAC prompt asking you if you want to let this app modify your computer, click yes. This should open a black window with some white text. The title of that window should be "Administrator: Command Prompt". Warning: this is not a tool you should mess around with outside of tutorials you trust.

5) In your command prompt window, type mklink /j "<backup folder>Monster Hunter World" "<save folder>".
Example, mklink /j "E:DropboxGames SavesMonster Hunter World" "C:SteamuserdataXXXXXXXX582010" (I just replaced my steam ID with Xs so as to not share it with everyone)

6) You're done. Your save backup is now functional. You can now safely enjoy MHW without risk of loosing your saves.

If you want to stop the backup
Go to your <backup folder> and right click the "Monster Hunter World" folder and choose "delete". Do NOT, I repeat do NOT go inside the "Monster Hunter World" folder to delete the files individually! Delete the"`Monster Hunter World" folder itself and it will delete the symbolic link without deleting your original saves.

Now I"ll be explaining how to get your save back in case of a problem. This will differ for those using something else than dropbox so I"ll let you find out how your service works.

If your save get corrupted.
Go to
home - Automatically backup your MHW saves on PC

https://www.dropbox.com/home and find your "Games Saves" folder in the list, then your "Monster Hunter World" folder, then the "remote" folder.
You should see 2 files "SAVEDATA_B" and "SAVEDATA1000", on the right of "SAVEDATA1000" should be a "…" icon. Click it and choose "Version hystory". (1000 may change to 2000 if you"re using slot 2 and 3000 for slot 3)
There select a version that wasn't corrupted (normally the version just before the one marked as "Current version" and click "Restore" on the right then confirm "Restore" in the popup.
Enjoy MHW

If your save gets deleted.
Go to
home - Automatically backup your MHW saves on PC

https://www.dropbox.com/home and find your "Games Saves" folder in the list, then your "Monster Hunter World" folder, then the "remote" folder.
On the far right the should be a "Show deleted files" button. Click on it and the SAVEDATA files should appear (normally those should be "SAVEDATA_B" and "SAVEDATA1000").
On the right of the deleted SAVEDATA files should be a "…" icon, click it and choose "Restore" then confirm "Restore" in the popup. (1000 may change to 2000 if you"re using slot 2 and 3000 for slot 3)
Enjoy MHW

I hope this helps some people to prevent future lost saves.
