- Obvious spoilers ahead
I will start this by saying that I have not included all things related to the movie, and I have probably missed a lot of things. I became a fan of the series when MH World came out, as it wasn't until then I had heard of it so it's likely I have missed any references to older games ( if there are any). I am also throroughly biased in that I am not a big fan of Paul Anderson, and that will probably be reflected in this breakdwon. With that out of the way, these are some of the things I found of note.
This first bit is from a New York Comic Con panel featuring an interview with Paul Anderson, director of the Monster Hunter movie. I added my comments/thoughts/extra bits, so apologies if this is confusing.
Anderson: "We went and found the most incredible landscape we could"
90% of what we have seen so far is flat desert
- Anderson: "(The locations they shot in) I think they provide and do justice to the world of monster hunter"
Has he seen the Wildspire Waste..? It's a lot more to it than just it being a desert, it's a thriving ecosystem.
- Anderson: "If I could have kind of built giant 50-foot monsters and shot them for real I would have loved to have done that"
If he made them more accurate to game size it would probably have been easier.
Interviewer: "Why Alice? (as lead)" (this was in regards to the RE movies but is applicable to the MH movie too in my opinion)
Anderson: "I have always been drawn to female lead movies, I just I like them."*
Personally I think it's better to choose whoever is best for the role, male or female but you do you Anderson.
Interviewer (in regards to MH): "What did you see in it, and what did Capcom really want you to bring to it?"
Anderson: "I think Capcom knew that I was, you know having turned their video game into the most successful video game franchise ever they were getting a you know a good set of hands, but also I think a passionate set of hands."
As someone who is familiar with how much fans hate the RE movies he made, I feel that is a bit disingenious.
Anderson claims that they have worked very closely with Capcom on the movie. And Capcom did apparently have input into everything, game animators were even allowed to comment on how the movement of the creatures weren't correct in fights. Anderson explains how he wanted Mila/the protagonist to be a stand in for the audience being new to the world, in the sense of first experience with the game, and for those who aren't as familiar with MH she could ask the questions of what things are. They wanted to show how skills learnt in our world as an army ranger were useless against these monsters, our guns do nothing so they have to adapt to the new rules. One of the main themes of the movie will be learning to cooperate. Now Anderson says that cooperation is key in MH and you have to fight with other people, but anyone who beat Fatalis solo can probably call bullshit on that. Also says that Rathalos is one of the hardest to kill. Granted he knows that Black Diablos is a female Diablos in heat, very angry and very territorial. These statements are paraphrased from the interview. I thought there would be more to Anderson saying the Meowscular Chef having a flirtatious relationship with Mila, but he didn't confirm Chef was now human. In fact just before that comment they were talking about Palicoes so yikes. As the interviewer said the internet is going to throw a fit about it.
Greater Rathalos is the name of the big boi Rathalos shown in promotional material. It's a "new and improved version" of Rathalos, they joke they fed it GMO's. Says that it's bigger and "better" because it's associated with the Ancient Civilisation. Both interviewer and Paul call it a dragon when it's always referred to as a wyvern. And finally he claims that there are no current plans for a sequel.
- Now let's start with weapons.
Mila: "I experimented with different weapons during the game and was able to kill more monsters with those blades. I thought they’d look really beautiful in an action sequence."
Personally I think it's a good thing she's thinking about what might look cool, but maybe that's just me. Maybe she is about to activate demon mode here? Just a guess though. The weapons seem accurate from what I can see.
Slinger is a bit bulky but otherwise looks good
Great Sword seems to be a bit small (should be noted they called it by the right name in the interview since some fans seem to be worried they haven't paid attention to the game all that closely.
Bow as seen in the movie seems to be pretty thin compared to bows in MH
Another shot of the bow and great sword
- Continuing on with armours and costumes
Apparently they're going for the odogaron armour but as seen in both HR and MR armour they are way off in the movie (I had to brighten the pictures a bit because I forgot how dark the Workshop background is).
Showing of the Handler, Serious Handler and Excitable A-lister This was taken from a post made by the actress for Serious Handler. Should be noted I think they're missing the belts since the pictures are from between shooting so they might not have been wearing them to make it easier to move around.
Field Team Leader's
armour seems to be mildly accurate
Oh Admiral, what did they do to
you? Granted this image is from the leaked teaser trailer so the quality is piss poor, but it didn't look much better in motion. It should be noted he now has a flaming axe, which he seems to use
- And then we have environments
I really hope they don't stay in the desert the majority of the movie. It is pretty
I wasn't able to find a better view but at least there are big rocks..?
Granted they seem to visit a forest at some point where they find a herd of Apceros. I could be wrong but I was fairly sure they hung out in the Wildspire Waste, not in forested areas.
Here is one on fire by the way
And I wonder what
this skeleton could be a reference too as it is pretty sizeable.
- And finally the monsters themselves (except Apceros)
Black Diablos looks good. Big thumbs up for accurate roar too.
Athough it is huge, probably gold crown. There is a shot of BD being shot with explosive arrow, which also features a pretty accurate walk cycle.
I have seen many people say that the Rathalos looks like a Rathian which is weird to me. So I put this together to show that no, it is not a Rathian. The movie in general uses more desaturated colors than the game, so that + the fact of the harsh lighting etc makes the black parts look a bit green. I think it's missing it's chin spike but I could be wrong. But it is undoubtedly a Rathalos.
An enourmous one at that since it's the Greater Rathalos as mentioned earlier.
This is an image taken from a trailer that shows it's size in relation to what I think is an E-3AWACS plane, although I could be wrong because I did like 5 minutes of googling, I aint an expert.
- Other things of note
Minigun is ineffective against a Diablos somehow. It should at least do some damage right..? Oh boi can't wait for the MH world to leak into the real world because that's confirmed to still be a thing. I don't know if it will involve a Rathalos vs Gore Magala fight like in the sample footage from years ago, can't remember if it was scrapped.
Final apologies if this is all a mess, hopefully this helps whoever is as interested in this coming trainwreck as I am.
