[Guide] A Fun and Efficient Way to Practise Dodging Roars

MonsterHunterWorld6 - [Guide] A Fun and Efficient Way to Practise Dodging Roars

Introduction

I think most of us can agree that roars are a plain nuisance and are worth considering the Earplugs IV charm for. Countless fellows tell us to "simply roll through roars", but of course this is easier said than done. For those who desire to take on the challenge of this technique, I have created a guide to help you practise rolling through roars, and in the process, make a fun game for yourself out of it.

What You Will Need

  1. The optional quest Special Arena: MR Nargacuga. You can get this by capturing it once. From then on it will then randomly appear in the Optional Quests section after each hunt.
  2. At least Agitator 1
  3. Evade Window 2, higher depending on your preferences. For starters I would recommend level 4 or 5 because of the increased marginal returns at these levels.
  4. (Optional) Any light weapon that tenderizes in two hits for the extra slinger ammo. This is not necessary at all—I do this practise with the Greatsword.

Note: This is not a guide teaching you the animations of monsters' roars. You can find an excellent video covering this

and

. Rather, this is a method of triggering the monster's roars to allow you to practise roar dodging 4-6 times every ten minutes.

Steps to Practise Rolling Roars

I will first briefly explain the theory:

Some of us recognize the animations leading up to roars, but knowing when a monster will roar is the other half of the battle. Now, a monster is absolutely guaranteed to roar in two scenarios:

  1. When it catches sight of you for the first time
  2. Every time it becomes enraged

We will use this theory to predict Nargacuga's roars and attempt dodging it 4-6 times during the hunt. The reason I chose Nargacuga to practise dodging is that it has a very distinctive tell when it becomes enraged: its eyes glow red.

Step 1 – Prepare Stones

Enter the special arena and grab the stones after you finish crawling through the tunnel.

Step 2 – Initial Roar Dodge #1

Nargacuga will be right below the jump. If Nargacuga is facing away from you, jump off the ledge and run in front of it to catch its attention. When it sees you, it will roar instantly. This is your chance to practise your first roar dodge.

If it is facing you by default, it will roar while you are still up on the ledge. In this case, you can practise your roar dodge by walking to the ledge and dodging off the ledge right when Nargacuga roars. Although you will not perform the roll animation, you will still have i-frames during the jump.

Step 3 – Flinch Shot

Immediately clutch to its head while it is roaring and claw spin (the 90 degree turn) until it faces the wall. Flinch shot into the wall with your stones so that it topples and then tenderize, then grab the slinger ammo. If you are using a heavy weapon, run and grab the stones on the lower floor of the Arena while Narga is downed.

If you used two or three claw attacks, Nargacuga will be enraged when it gets up. If you used one claw attack, clutch to its head right before it gets up and use the flinch shot—again—immediately when it gets up. Nargacuga is guaranteed to be enraged at this point.

Step 4 – Enraged Roar Dodge #2

The second roar is coming up. At this point, Nargacuga's eyes will be glowing red and it will jump away from you to create some distance. Watch it carefully and dodge right when its head shoots up.

Step 5 – Fight normally until Agitator wears off

Fight normally and enjoy your Agitator bonus. This is where any level of Agitator comes in handy. After about two minutes, you will see the "Agitator Skill has worn off" message and the monster's eye icon turn from red to yellow. Agitator is useful because the message actually appears slightly before the eye turns yellow. The message will help you preemptively get the drop on Nargacuga right as its enraged state ends.

Step 6 – Enraged Roar #3, #4, #5, etc.

As soon as you see the message and the eye icon turn yellow, clutch to Nargacuga's head and claw spin three times, ending with a flinch shot into the wall and tenderize while it's down. Pick up the slinger ammo if you have a light weapon or run to grab the stones if you have a heavy weapon.

Note: The arena stones respawn every 2-3 minutes. If they are not present and you desperately need them, climb to the upper floor and pick them up right outside the tunnel you originally crawled through.

Nargacuga is again guaranteed to be enraged. Watch its eyes glow red and jump away from you, then prepare for roar dodge #3. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 as many times as you want, practising the roar dodge each time it gets enraged, until Nargacuga is almost slain.

On average you can trigger Nargacuga's roar about five times per hunt.

Step 7 – Abandon Quest and Repeat!

When Nargacuga is almost slain and you see the skull icon, abandon the quest. This is done so that you retain the Special Arena: MR Nargacuga optional quest and can repeat this process as many times as you'd like.

Ending Notes

You can do this with any monster you'd like—I chose Nargacuga simply because its roar and enraged state are very distinctive. Collect as many Special Arena quests as you'd like and practise to your heart's content! For most non-Elder Dragons, the same guaranteed roar scenarios apply.

Other monsters in the non-Rath Flying Wyvern family share similar roar animations as Narga, namely Barioth and Tigrex.

The Rath family has their own distinctive animation that you will not have too much trouble learning—it's actually easier than Nargacuga's. Diablos and Black Diablos have their own animation, but they have a distinctive head shake before their roar. You are welcome to practise all of these next.

Finally, the Brute Wyverns like Anjanath and Glaveneus have a more difficult tell that you can practise once you are comfortable which the first two groups. Again, refer to the videos in the beginning to learn the tells of each monster family.

When you are ready to practise rolling through Elder Dragon Roars, the same steps as above apply, but you will have to use their non-arena optional quest. The Elder Dragons tend to roar a bit more than the two scenarios I listed above (particularly Lunastra before its Supernova and Ruiner Nergigante before its divebomb), but they are still guaranteed to roar when they first see you and upon becoming enraged. Note that Teostra and Lunastra are in the same roar family, where they stand up on their hind legs and roar when their arms spread out.

Making Your Practice More Fun

To make your practising more fun, try tallying your successful roar dodges each hunt! Test yourself to achieve 5/5 succcessful dodges per hunt. Maybe focus on one monster per week. All of your practice will ultimately make you a better hunter and turn monsters roars from a chore into a fun mini-game during hunts.

TL;DR

  • Monsters roar when they first see you and each time they become enraged
  • Keep doing Claw Attacks and Flinch Shots to enrage the monster
  • Nargacuga has a very distinctive roar and enrage signal
  • You can try this with any monster, but Elder Dragons will require extra practice
  • Abandon your Arena quest so you can practise indefinitely!
