A few notes:
Lynians are excluded from this count since the series doesn't consider them huntable monsters and they are treated more like humanoids then monsters.
Subspecies and the likes all fall under the category of variant Large Monsters for this count. Since in the end they are all the same species with a few differences, and some are not even actual subspecies (e.g. Black Diablos is actually a female in heat and Savage Deviljho is a mutation)
Large Monsters and Elder Dragons fall under different categories for the purpose of this count since they are treated differently in the games, even though in the games they are both considered Large Monsters.
Monsters who are categorized as "???" (Such as Gore Magala) will be part of the Elder Dragon category for the purpose of this count, due to the similarities they share and the fact that "???" is not an actual classification.
Non-canon monsters such as the Behemoth and the Leshen, and monsters "original" crossover monsters such as the Kumashira, are excluded from the list.
Zenith variants of existing species are excluded from the list because they are individual monsters with unique properties, rather than being a group. "standalone" Zenith species still count.
EX variants are excluded because they're basically the species itself with "EX" added to their name.
I exlcluded Great Poogie from due to the creature being an oddity of sorts.
All of the above notes are based on what I know from Monster Hunter World, since that's the first MH game I played from start to finish (I mean, I have started playing MH3, but then my Wii broke).

The order of the games in the list are as they appear here
For all the entries beyond MHWI, I left out the sections for returning monsters and sub-total monsters because the Frontier games expand by season, which means that in essence they're all the same games and the monster list on the wiki for them are all the same. I just couldn't keep up with who returned in what season. And the list for MHS doesn't distribute the monsters based on their sizes. That and I need to get back to my business, as making this list took too much of my free time (This list was mostly created for the main entries, anyways).
