Opinion: Bow was the most changed weapon in MH:World

MonsterHunterWorld6 - Opinion: Bow was the most changed weapon in MH:World

Obviously, it doesn't really matter if bow was the *most* altered weapon coming into World. That's kind of a pointless title for a weapon. I say this because I mained bow prior to World, but then dropped it for a long time because of the changes. The real point here is to hear from users of other weapons to find if they felt their weapon was in a similar position, and if the transition effected them similarly/how they felt about it. It'd also be interesting to hear from other bow users about their opinion on the changes. So in the interest of committing to this springboard, I'll make the case for bow as the most changed weapon here.

I want to preface this by saying I didn't necessarily hate the changes made to bow. I just felt they were a farcry from the way it used to be played. It was a lot to adjust to, and I wanted to get deeper into charge blade, so after early low rank, I didn't come back to bow until end-game MR.

Old: Bow in old world didn't have step charge, rapid fire charging, or dragon piercer. The only way you could charge your bow in old world was to keep drawing the arrow (holding the charge button and waiting for it to hit charge level 3). Bows also had a bunch of different types. The spread shot, pierce shot, and normal shot were all different bows, not different moves. I'm not going to go into this part too much because even though it's a big change, that's not at the heart of what made bow different in World. Bow gameplay in old world was essentially notching your arrow, walking around to position yourself while it charged, and then either aiming for a split second to line up the shot or shooting from the hip (which was preferable because it's faster, but only possible if your target wasn't above or below you). Then if your bow had power shot, which was basically a follow-up shot, you would use that too if you had the time. That's pretty much all there was to it. There was also critical distance to consider, but that's still important for bow in World. This weapon's play was very simple but was also elegant in that way (imo). It was a positioning weapon, plain and simple. The weapon rewarded players who could navigate the fight without rolling and aim well, no frills attached. If you could do this, you could use the weapon to its potential.

New: The holding charge mechanic is now obsolete. You don't do that anymore, at least not if you're trying to use the weapon anywhere near its potential. You're constantly stepping to charge or using rapid fire. Once you're at the higher charge levels, you're stepping out of power shots to instantly return to max charge level (That was hard for me to come to grips with for a while). So yeah, there are all the new movement and charging methods, that's the obvious part. There's another very big difference that people who didn't play the weapon before and after probably don't notice, though: aiming. In World, you're in aiming mode almost constantly. You can't charge-step if you're not. In old world, you only aimed for brief moments at a time, and you didn’t want to move while you were doing it. You also tried to aim with the left stick if you could. Just point your hunter at the weak spot and let it fly. This made aiming your shots (either in precision aiming or from the hip) more of a quick-draw style. In World, you're always in sights, even as you move, so it's more of a constant tracking style of aiming (while adjusting for your wild movement). Neither of these styles are inherently better than the other, but they *are* drastically different. They're basically the antithesis of each other.

There are some other more minor differences, but I feel like this post is already getting too long. Like I said earlier, I'm interested to hear what other players think about bow changes and drastic weapon changes in the new world in general. Personally, I've developed more of a taste for this new bow now that I've returned to it with more knowledge about how it works from watching other users play with it. I sunk hundreds upon hundreds of hours into the weapon in the old world, and then basically didn't know how to use it in MHW on my own (at least not optimally). That in and of itself is probably a testament to how different it has become. But I've gotta say, now that I'm playing it with a sound understanding, it's pretty fun. I'll always have a soft spot for simplistic old world bow, but I'm also enjoying this new, dynamic, action-y bow gameplay. It just took a long hiatus and a second chance to get there. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it does a *lot* more damage than it used to.

tl;dr: old world bow and new world bow are crazy different and I'm interested in hearing opinions on this and perspectives of other weapon users who feel their's underwent similar transitions.
