Hello, I am mucho unhappy megamad about the Grinding Lands (aka the Guiding Lands) and I'm going to make an extremely long post about it. I'm too lazy to TL:DR it so someone else with more patience than me can do that.

People like to share their MR's for this so… If it's relevant, I'm MR 150 as of writing this and I'm not playing again till Rajang comes out.

But, I wanted to start a separate discussion where I outline the problems I have w/ it and offer up some ideas on how you can get around these problems instead of just complaining and leaving it at that.

PROBLEMS/SUMMARY OF GRINDING LANDS:

The Grinding Lands works as follows: You got 4 biomes each with their own level and monsters – you probably already know this already. Well, what you might not know is that these levels are increased based on Resource Points you get from monsters. To use an anecdote that came up while I played: I wanted to hunt a Tempered Glavenus in the Wildspire. I put down a trap to keep it still so I can beat it's face in when an Odogaron appeared. The Odogaron was from the Vale, the Glavenus from the Wildspire. Odo accidentally ran into the shock trap instead of Glavenus, and my level went from Rank 7 -> 6 because research points for another area were triggered by a monster that deranks the Wildspire and ranks up the Vale.

In the same way you can rank up your Grinding Lands with the tracks, you can ALSO derank them.

Another quirk to the Grinding Lands is that it tells you when a monster is going to derank another biome. Let's say I want to hunt that Odogaron now because I hate weasels, and I notice that it's icon near the minimap (the one that appears when you select a monster you want your targeting cam to focus on) has a down arrow. This down arrow means an/multiple area(s) is(are) going to get deranked if you go through with pursuing anything related to this monster. This includes picking up tracks or hunting it. This is a very important aspect to the Grinding Lands because there are times when you NEED to derank areas in order to get monsters to spawn.

For example, there are some upgrades at the Smithy that require materials from monsters who aren't tempered. One infamous one is material from an untempered Glavenus for certain Custom Upgrades/Augments. This is "infamous" because you need to reach Rank 7 in the Wildspire in order to unlock Tempered Lunastra, whose parts you need for the Handicraft IV charm. This means that you need to DERANK your Wildspire and cock yourself out of Tempered Elder Dragons (who give you gems you need to UNCAP Rarity 12 armor btw) in order to get an untempered version of the monster you want OR pray to Gosh that someone is spamming Untempered Glavenuses in their Grinding Lands.

So, OK, not too big of an issue, right? Just grinding for the monsters that WON'T derank you and bingo bongo boom! Well, not exactly. You see, I kinda left out some info on that down arrow. The down arrow only seems to show up when you're going to reduce the actual RANK of an area. What I mean is that, if you're gonna go from 7 -> 6 with this one hunt, it's gonna show up. Otherwise, if you just lose meter for an area, you will NOT get this to show up. In other words, the game WON'T tell you when certain monsters are going to fuck your rank if it's not gonna reduce by 1 number. This means that you can potentially lose massive chunks of an area without knowing how to avoid it apart from trying to guess as to which areas influence other areas. This can be really annoying when you realize that getting an area from 6 -> 7 takes a lot of fucking time. Your XP becomes extremely strained when you hit the point where even Tempered Elders are barely increasing your meter. Your only way to counter this is to do some hardcore ass sniffing to prevent shit from going down. This means that you have more of an incentive to just grind one area over the others, especially when you DON'T KNOW what the materials for an augment are until you get them. If you aren't using the excel spreadsheet (which I didn't have at the time I faced these issues), you legit just have to press forward and pray to god the mats you need WILL appear in the area you're grinding because you can't afford to lose it when you're working toward something you want.

On top of all this peril with the Grinding Lands deranking system, you also have to contend with the fact that using other people's Grinding Lands ALSO affects YOUR rank. If I want to fight in the Coral Highlands for some Tempered Namielle parts for health boost augments or rank up the Vale for some Tempered Acidic Glavenus parts for handi IV, I'm going to run into problems because I can derank MY Grinding Lands by fighting in those locations. In doing so, I can potentially LOSE my ability to summon Tempered Elder Dragons in my zones, some of which will contain mats that OTHER people might need (Tempered Luna, Kushala, etc.). This type of dilemma put me in some really nasty situations where I couldn't go help people who were a lower MR than me to boost their lands since it wasn't beneficial to me if it would derank me despite them having parts I needed and they couldn't reap the rewards of my grinding since they weren't MR 100+.

Speaking of which, let's talk about MR requirements. The above linked reddit post mentions this, but there are some more weird issues that come up as a result. In order to uncap your Grinding Lands, you need to hit certain MR milestones.

– T2 monsters and Elder Dragons don't spawn until you hit rank 6

– Every rank uncap restricts people from playing with you if they're not in that rank range

I didn't know this at the time and thought, based on the tutorial, that I could help the friends I play with out by boosting my Grinding Lands and letting them come in to reap the rewards. I even stocked up on specific T2's for them since I wanted to lessen their grind. Sadly, this did not work out in my favor and I legit just had to go into their game and derank all my shit in order to get them to where they wanted to be. Very fun.

The last issue I want to talk about is the spawn rate of monsters when Elder Dragons appear. Normally, only 3 monsters can be active on the map at a time, tempered or untempered. When an Elder Dragon appears, this changes from 3 -> 2. If no Elder Dragon is on the map, then you will never know when one is about to appear. And, when one does appear, a monster that you aren't fighting will randomly leave. Now, I want to call your attention to "a monster that you aren't fighting" and cite two anecdotes that I experienced to explain that this can happen to you.

There were two separate points in time where I summoned 2 monsters, Radobaan and Glavenus. And, in both instances, when I summoned this monster, an Elder Dragon appeared on the map before I could actually initiate combat with them. As a result, they actually DESPAWNED. I wasted the special analysis I had because I didn't sprint to the monster fast enough before an Elder Dragon I didn't even know what appear showed up. The game didn't seem to care that they were summoned in the first place. This isn't something you can fix by "resetting" the Grinding Lands using a patched exploit or whatever, this will just happen to you when you think all is well.

And those are the general, nipple inducing problems I had with the Grinding Lands and how it negatively affected my time in them. I didn't cover shit like how the Analysis Tracks work because it's honestly not that big of an issue and they're fairly lenient when you hit the Tempered Monsters. Now, for the solutions!

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention was that you can actually NOT gain rank in the Grinding Lands even if you hunt a monster FROM the area. For example, if an Ebony Odogaron spawns in the Vale but not the Wildspire, there is a chance you just will not gain ANY XP for hunting it. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or not but my theory is that this happens because the monster doesn't "NATIVELY" spawn there (or at least the game doesn't consider it that way). This means you have more of an incentive to hunt monsters like Radobaan in the Vale over Ebony Odo, for example. This happens with other monsters too like Tigrex, but I just remembered this now that the GL does this to you and I wanted to make a mention of it here for clarity.

SOLUTION:

The following are going to be a solution to these issues I brought up. This solution is not, "thing Capcom can do to fix." This is a thing you can actively do to improve your experience so that it's not as shitty as mine was. Yes, you heard that right, this is not a "like so Capcom can see" thing. You can perform this action in the game as it is NOW.

Anyway, let's get started:

The primary issue with the Grinding Lands is managing the diversity of the materials you need between each area with the monsters that spawn in said areas. If you go to high, you have to deal with Elder Dragons. If the difference in area levels is severe enough, you can potentially lose Tempered Elder dragons that you NEED with constant deranking. The solution to this is to actually play it slow from the get go.

When you get your first area to Level 4, the Yian Garuga quest will unlock that will allow you to uncap your areas. My advice to you is: DO NOT do this quest. Instead, grind every single area until you get several stacks of mats from the lower tier monsters. You are effectively trying to eliminate the need to have to rollback an area by basically nuking it as hard as you possibly can before uncapping it and moving on.

Doing so will give you a few benefits: You will always have augment mats on hand at all times, your playtime will be petered out and you'll have a lot of content to chew through in the meantime, you will also gain shitloads of MR that can propel you EASILY to the next rank cap (in case you don't know, the Grinding Lands gives you more XP than Snow and Cherry Blossoms), AND you will not have to deal with potential Elder Spawns messing with your hunts.

Once you get a bunch of stacks of mats, do the garuga quest, uncap yourself, and repeat the process for all monsters in Rank 5 zones. This will be significantly easier to do since your ranks will all be around 3 -> 4 when you do this and you only need T1 tempered monster parts since you spam grinded everything else earlier. You won't have to worry about elder spawns and you'll overall reduce rollbacks ONCE AGAIN.

Do the same for Rank 6, then Rank 7. Eventually, you won't really need the Grinding Lands at all and you'll feel a lot less cheated by fucking yourself over with deranking constantly.

It's too late for me to try this out since I'm basically done with the game at this point until Rajang, but I'll totally do this when IB comes out on PC and I have to start anew. If you are currently in Rank 7 areas right now. I recommend you start grinding the lowest areas in your Grinding Lands, or hop in games with people with lower MRs than you and apply this strat there. It'll be annoying to derank yourself, but I think it'll be worth it in the long run.
