I wrote a Workshop code to scan a cross-section of a heroes’ hitbox, used an external script to help taking screenshots from multiple angles, and stitch them together to produce the animations as shown.

Few things to be aware of when interpreting these animations

  1. The position of the spheres are adjusted by the normal vector at the hit position, though this still makes the actual hitbox slightly larger than the volume of the spheres shown.
  2. There are actually 2 dummy bots, both are stunned, but one is frozen and invisible, the other is phased out and visible. Therefore the positions of the spheres are consistent across each frame because it only hit the frozen and invisible model.
  3. Why not use a frozen model only? Because it looks bad when played back.
  4. The rays are fired from the two sides of the model. Hence, the obstructed sides of the hitboxes are not hit and therefore not shown. For example, between D.Va mech’s legs, between Reaper’s arms, etc. As a result, stacked frames animations are only available in side view.
  5. Some heroes have a wild idle animation (Roadhog, Junkrat, Winston’s Primal form, Lucio). The reference photos in the stacked frame animations may have a slight misalignment with the spheres.

Here are the animations from individual angles

There are three slices in the individual angles, one is spheres only, one is spheres+model, one is both images blended together. This allows blocked spheres to be slightly visible.

I used AutoHotKey to take screenshots automatically, Blender to create the animations. There were over 54,915 screenshots taken.

The screenshots were captured in patch 1.42.0.0-63778 and 1.42.0.0-63869

A video commentary is available here

I am planning on making another version with the front/back view available and a cleaner background — the current background is too visually crowded. I will also update the albums when any new heroes are added, or if the patch note mentions hitbox changes (unlikely tho). When the post is archived, please visit my profile for updates.
