Every picture, video, or general post seems to be comparing Spider-man PS4 to the movies and comics that came before it. At first, this seems like a solid idea. Build your work off the success of others, but in retrospect, it seems like Insomniac focused primarily on combining as many ideas into one game as possible.
Several posts mark comparisons between Insomniac's Peter – from facial structure to slinging animations – and that from the cinema for instance. Perhaps their main goal has been to approach the widest Spidey fan possible. Again this sounds like a well-rounded approach, yet I can't help but wonder what a true Insomniac version of Spider-man might've been beyond simply some added white color.
Throughout my entire playthrough of the game, I kept uttering to myself that, "Yeah this is the best Spider-Man game ever made, but do I love it?" After careful consideration and several playthroughs along with 100%, I can safely say this: I enjoyed my time, but only marginally so at best (comparatively speaking). At any one moment throughout the game I was pleased with the overall package, be that narrative, combat, slinging, open-world, etc, but I was never in love at any point. Take Web of Shadows for an example; yes it was a broken mess beyond all doubt and reasoning, but there were qualities of that game I absolutely loved. Even though the game was broken, I couldn't stop playing. From traversal to combat to simply being able to swing around in your red and blues one moment and causing mayhem and destruction in your black the next.
Fast forwarding to next-gen Spidey and you find a title which usually can't hold my interest for long. The combat is good, but isn't memorable, the traversal is satisfying, but not rewarding (or as much as it could be), and the narrative is solid even though it lacks the artistic punch imo. That's not to say I don't appreciate the game or that we need a WoS clone (although please do), but rather that in the future I'd like to trade $60 for a completely new experience. That's exactly what made the Spider-Man 2 game so memorable- it was the first open world physics based Spidey experience.
I'm still playing and loving the game though. Spider-Man PS4 is an incredible tribute to all things great and Spidey, but they could've dared to be something more than a polished wheel. I truly hope to see something Amazing in the future. What are your thoughts?
TL;DR: Spider-Man PS4 is the best cumulative experience, but doesn't bring anything fresh to the formula. Thoughts?
