FAQ – Subnautica: Below Zero

Subnautica 6 - FAQ - Subnautica: Below Zero

This is an unofficial FAQ for Early Access for Subnautica: Below Zero.

This FAQ was last updated on Feb 19, 2020.

Note that I'm near the 6-month edit limit for this reddit post, so this may be my last update here. I'll be creating a 2nd FAQ when we get closer to the full release later this year.

FAQ – No-Spoiler questions

Q: When will the game be released?

A: The current target is the 1st half of 2020. However, these dates often change and get delayed. Due to the
the future of below zeros story - FAQ - Subnautica: Below Zero

story re-write, I wouldn't be surprised if the release is considerably delayed. No one, not even the devs, knows the actual release date.

Q: What's the current update?

A: EA8 ("Lost Ship Update") was released on Feb 19. The story is going to be re-written between EA8 and the final version of the game. You can also enable
Experimental Mode to obtain daily updates.

Q: Where can I find status updates for releases?

A: Check any of the following:

Q: How far along has the game been developed? Is the story complete?

A: EA8 (Feb 2020) contains nearly all features and locations, but they still need polishing and adjustments. It contains Acts 3 out of 5 of the original story (and parts of Act 4). However, there is NO ENDING. The story is going to be re-written between EA8 and the final version of the game.

If I were to give a personal estimate of how complete EA8 is compared to what one of would expect of a finished product:

  • Gameplay features: 70%
  • Location completion: 60%
  • Story: 60% of the original storyline
  • Polishing and fine-tuning: 40%

There's probably 8+ hours of gameplay (or 20+ hours if you just wander around aimlessly), but you could speed-rush it in 2 hours.

Q: Will there be any future Early Access updates after EA8?

A: Yes, and it should include the story re-write.

Q: Can I continue my save game between Early Access updates?

A: Technically yes, but not really. If you continue your save game between early access releases, you'll almost certainly miss features or new story elements in the newer releases. The rule of thumb is that you need to restart your save game every time there's a major update.

Q: Why can't I find when other people have encountered or reported it?

A: It's likely the others are on the Experimental release cycle, which get updates daily instead of once every 1-2 months. It's also possible you need to start a new save game if a new feature is missing. The rule of thumb is that you need to restart your save game every time there's a major update.

Q: How do I enable Experimental mode?

A: See
Experimental Mode, which is available in the Steam version of the game. Experimental Mode will give you daily beta updates.

Q: I'm physically stuck in the game and cannot escape from my current location.

A: Enable console and enter either "warpforward 5" or "kill" (suicide and respawn at last safe location)

Q: Should I buy this game now or later?

A: A variation of this question gets asked every week. It's a personal decision. There's no correct answer for whether you should start playing now. Please use existing search results if you really want other people's opinions. If you're looking for a complete experience, I recommend holding off playing it until released. The re-written story should make it between EA8 and the final version, so keep that in mind if you want to experience the "early access" version of the story.

Q: Do I need the original Subnautica to play this? Should I play the the original first?

A: No. It's a separate game. Yes, you should probably play the original first. The story will be confusing otherwise.

Q: I can't wait that long. What can I do to pass time?

A: Whatever you want. You can revisit OG Subnautica and try a super hard "Subnautica: Below Zero (meters)" challenge. Or play "The Long Dark" or "No Man's Sky".

Q: Where are all the devs?

A: They're on the Discord channel. Please read the Discord rules first before chatting; it's very easy to get banned for breaking the rules. Do NOT ping the mods or devs.

Q: Does VR exist for this game?

A: The devs said they're not looking into VR, so don't get your hopes up. (It's possible there will be fan-created mods)

Q: Is this game scary?

A: Not really unless you truly have thalassophobia. This isn't SOMA or The Forest.

Q: Will Below Zero be available for consoles?

A: Yes, eventually. Devs are working console ports, but they won't be released until the game is done.

Q: Will there be multiplayer?

A: Definitely not. As stated by Fowlin:

Every time someone mentions "co-op" or "multiplayer" the devs push back the full release date by a day.

Q: Will new Below Zero features be added to the original Subnautica.

A: No.

Q: How come I can't scan in the game?

A: Not all structures and flora/fauna are scannable yet.

FAQ – Spoiler questions

Q: Is there a walkthrough for the game?

A: Yes. See this guide

Q: Where do I find the data box for or the blueprint for ?

A: Search in Data Boxes and Blueprints

Q: Where do I find a specific raw material?

A: Search in Raw Materials

Q: How do I get into the alien base at the start of the game?

A: You can't yet as of EA8, at least not without console cheats. The white tablet isn't available yet. Also, there's nothing inside.

Q: I'm past the start of the game and can freely explore everywhere. Where do I go next? Where is Sanctuary Zero?

A: It's in the Twisty Bridges biome. Keep exploring until you find some alien pillars. Then search there.

Q: Are there vehicles are in the game?

A: Yes, you can find scannable fragments to create the Sea Truck (+ modules), Prawn Suit, and Snow Fox. The Cyclops and Seamoth have been removed.

Q: Who is this woman we encounter in a badass-looking Prawn Suit?

Read:  Base-Building Tips

A: You will find out as a part of the plot when you meet her again later in the story.

Q: What rewards do I get for scanning Precursor artifacts

A: See Precursor Bounties

Q: How do I repair the radio tower?

A: You need to find one ship wreck salvage part needed to repair the radio tower. There are 3 ship wrecks near the lilypads. 2 of them contain ship wrecks salvage parts, which are hidden behind compartments that need to be opened with a laser cutter. Note that there's currently a bug where it can break again on its own. You do NOT need to repair it a 2nd time.

Q: How do I get inside the locked section of the Output Omega Research Base?

A: You will automatically get the code when you visit the base after repairing the radio tower, finding AL-AN in Sanctuary Zero, and then waiting for the Glacial Basin signal to appear. Note that if you visit before receiving the code, the Omega Research Notes will not spawn.

Q: Where is the Sea Emperor Juvenile?

A: It only spawns in the arctic biome near the Lilypads, and only after you receive the quest to find Enzyme 42. (It's quite infuriating that there's no clue of its remote location, and that it's not there from the start. The Wiki has the exact location.)

Q: I've completed a lot in the game, but I don't know what to do now. Where should I go next in the game? When does the story currently end?

A: There's a checklist of items you can complete in my basic EA8 Walkthrough linked here. You can also find all 3 AL-AN fragments and build him for some dialogue and a minor cutscene, but there's no story afterwards. A quick summary is that you need to finish repair the radio tower, download AL-AN, gather the Omega Research Notes, send the Kharaa Sample, meet Maida in her base, collect Jeff's PDA, and send the Enzyme 42 sample.
