Subnautica has completely hooked me unlike any other game I’ve played in years. I can’t really figure out how or why this happened. At first I thought maybe it was because I’ve never played an underwater fps, but I don’t think that is really it, maybe that is a small contributing factor.
I have played a couple survival type games on my cell phone before but lost interest in them after a few days or so because of how boring the grinding became.
The only thing I can think of that would explain why I have become addicted is the combination of the game’s pacing and progression along with its delayed gratification system and exploration elements. They must have found the perfect mix or something.
The fact that the game starts off really slow and fairly difficult at first…giving you just barely enough incentive to nudge forward with character progression and resource gathering, without causing you to find it boring and say screw this and completely give up…and then gradually unlocking more and more for you to explore and do and experience once you finally find the resources you’ve been looking for…it seems to have all been executed in a pretty wicked fashion.
Not exactly sure what Subnautica has tapped into here but it’s definitely something very fresh and I’m surprised this game hasn’t received more love or press.
Thanks to this game. I’ve been getting 4, maybe 5 hours of sleep each week night before waking up to go to work. I have lost total control/concern for time just like I used to back in the day when I was an actual hardcore gamer. Last Saturday I literally slept for 11 hours in attempt to recover the sleep I lost during the week.
I just hope for the sake of my job (and my health) that I finish Subnautica soon. My girl has NOT been happy with me ever since I acquired this game last week. Gotta say this is definitely a dangerous game to start playing if you have any sort of life or daily responsibilities. I know I can’t be the only one whose life this game has recently devastated.
